Rebuilding Topeak Road Morph

My trusty Topeak Road Morph G totally failed on a recent ride. It got more and more difficult to pump air into the tube, and then just siezed up. Later the pump handle moved but it wasn’t pumping any air.

An O-ring on the pump piston wore out. I’d like to find a replacement – the apparent size is 2mm cross-section by 17mm interior diameter (I.D.), but our local hardware store doesn’t have anything that size in stock.

Topeak’s US distributor has rebuild kits for $5, plus $5 shipping.

I did try lubricating the O-ring with some silicone grease I have for plumping – that seems to work at least a little bit but who knows if that will hold up on the road.

When the pump was failing I did dis-assemble it (it’s pretty easy: un-screw the pump head holder to loosen the end-butt plug, then use the pump handle to unscrew it the rest of the way). Then I tried to add a little bio-lubricant (spit) to make things work. That did not work.

I’ll see if I can find a suitable o-ring for less than $10. If not I’ll get the rebuild kit.
