Idaho Stop – why treating stop signs as yield is safer for cyclists

Years ago, Idaho passed a law allowing cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs. Apparently, the next year there was a 14.5% reduction in Bicycle injuries.

This post is about exploring and recording the scholarly record related to the Idaho Stop concept.

For the record: I buy it from a personal perspective. But I think the scholarly record is maybe a bit mis-represented when this comes up.

For example: here

Meggs is cited as a source, here’s the paper: https://denver.streetsblog.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/14/2018/02/idaho-law-jasonmeggs-2010version-2.pdf

I can’t find that this paper was published in a peer reviewed journal, which gives me pause.

Chen (2015) is cited: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0925753515001587

Really interesting stuff – based on data from Seattle! And, I did not see a specific reference to stop signs in the summary…
