Remembering TD2024: Peak and End

One of the best books I’ve ever read is: Thinking Fast & Slow by Daniel Khaneman. A big part of the book is about the inherent biases in human thinking, and my favorite example is about this experiment: Why people prefer more pain.

The video is a bit long and nerdy, but worth it.

Basically: when you remember things, you don’t remember them as they were, but rather as a ‘peak’ experience, and the last part of your experience. For example in the video they talk about how making your vacation longer may not make it more memorable or satisfying, but adding more ‘peak’ experiences may.

So… What were my peak experiences from TD 24?

  • Doing the hard part backwards in the dark (Hatchita CDT)
  • Discovering Divila Ranch
  • Three Thunderstorms: Grants, Lk. Hopewell, Platoro
  • Night time approach to Silver City
  • Green Chile in Cuba
  • You call this a road/Abiquiu, CDT sections

I’m still thinking about it all, and this list doesn’t seem final. Strangely these are less about the people I met than last time.

Other stories are: Chaco Wash (dropped my phone and had to backtrack 7 miles), dropped my tracker, brake bleeding…  Still feels like there are 20 stories, not 2 or 3.
